Light determines how we perceive it. As early as 2012, we wrote in the professional publication TOP HOTELIERSTVO about lighting design as the \u201cfourth dimension of architecture\u201d \u2013 a tool capable of changing atmosphere, orientation, visual comfort and the emotions people experience in a space.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The expert article <strong>\u201cLight as the fourth dimension\u201d<\/strong> was published in TOP HOTELIERSTVO 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Across pages 42\u201343, it explored lighting design for hotels, restaurants and commercial spaces, but above all a principle that still forms the basis of our work today:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Meeting a standard is not enough. Quality lighting must work technically, support the architecture and create the right feeling in the space.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Light creates emotion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Light is one of the most powerful tools for influencing the atmosphere of a space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A romantic dinner in a restaurant needs very different lighting conditions from a hotel reception, a workplace or a space requiring a high degree of visual precision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is therefore no single universal \u201ccorrect light\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The task of lighting design is to find the right combination of intensity, direction, contrast, light colour and luminaires according to <strong>what will happen in the space and how people should feel there<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This ability to work with light as an emotion is what separates lighting design from simply positioning luminaires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A hotel or restaurant is not sold by interior design alone<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In hotels, restaurants, showrooms and other commercial spaces, lighting has another important role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It influences the <strong>customer\u2019s first impression<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Visitors rarely judge materials, luminaires or architectural elements separately. They perceive the space as a whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Light helps determine:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>which elements they notice first,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>how large the space feels,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>whether materials feel rich or flat,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>whether they feel comfortable,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>where their attention is naturally directed,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and what atmosphere they associate with the space.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is why the original 2012 article already highlighted <strong>sales psychology and the importance of light in presenting spaces and products<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The principle remains just as relevant today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Not everything needs to be lit equally<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A technically simple solution can be based on uniform illumination across the entire area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result, however, is often a visually flat space with no hierarchy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Professional lighting design works with differences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some areas can remain calmer while others are emphasised. Light can guide people through a space and draw attention to a reception desk, artwork, wall material, table, product or architectural detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This creates <strong>contrast and lighting hierarchy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And hierarchy is what gives a space depth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visual comfort matters as much as the amount of light<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More light does not automatically mean better lighting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A design must consider not only the required illuminance but also:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>glare,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>contrast,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the direction of incident light,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the luminance of individual surfaces,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reflections,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>colour rendering quality,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>correlated colour temperature,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>light distribution,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the balance between direct and indirect lighting.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A poorly positioned luminaire can have sufficient output and still make a space uncomfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why <strong>visual comfort<\/strong> is one of the fundamental parameters of good lighting design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lighting designer \u2013 technician and designer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The original article was already discussing the profession of the <strong>lighting designer<\/strong> in 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The role sits at the intersection of several disciplines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A lighting designer needs to understand technology, photometry and luminaire performance, while also understanding architecture, materials, perspective and human perception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lighting design is therefore more than a technical calculation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It combines:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>technology + architecture + physics + design + experience.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A calculation can confirm that a project meets the required parameters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Only a well-developed lighting concept determines <strong>how the finished space will actually feel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Light as the fourth dimension of architecture<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A building does not change during the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After dark, however, its character can change completely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Light can emphasise volume, facade texture, lines, materials or individual architectural elements.
