In 2013, however, the technology was still developing rapidly and customers often made decisions mainly by wattage or price. Even then, LEDCO was pointing out that a good selection process had to go further.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The June issue of <strong>Pekn\u00e9 b\u00fdvanie 6\/2013<\/strong> featured the article <strong>\u201cP\u00e1siky, ktor\u00e9 svietia\u201d<\/strong>, to which <strong>LEDCO s.r.o.<\/strong> contributed expert information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of our key recommendations was to consider not only the electrical power of an LED strip in <strong>W\/m<\/strong>, but also its actual luminous flux in <strong>lm\/m<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That principle still applies more than a decade later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The technology has changed dramatically, but the technical logic behind selecting an LED strip remains similar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Watts do not tell you how much light you will get<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With LED technology, two basic quantities need to be distinguished:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>W\/m \u2013 watts per metre<\/strong><br>indicates the electrical power consumed by the LED strip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>lm\/m \u2013 lumens per metre<\/strong><br>indicates how much light the strip produces per metre of length.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two LED strips with the same wattage do not necessarily produce the same amount of light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The difference may be caused by LED chip efficacy, component quality, strip construction, operating temperature or other technical properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why we were already stressing in 2013 that <strong>choosing an LED strip by wattage alone is not the right approach<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">One LED strip for atmosphere, another for task lighting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the subjects in the original article was selecting LED strips according to the amount of light required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That remains fundamental today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An LED strip may provide only a subtle accent, or it may serve as fully functional lighting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different requirements apply to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>decorative furniture backlighting,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>indirect ceiling lighting,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a line of light integrated into a wall,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>shelf lighting,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a kitchen worktop,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a commercial interior,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the manufacture of a linear luminaire.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is why we do not begin a design by asking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cHow many watts does the LED strip use?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A better question is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat does this LED strip need to illuminate, and how much light do we need for that?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Historical values should not be treated as universal guidance today<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the 2013 article, we also provided indicative luminous-flux values for different applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the benefit of hindsight, these should be understood as <strong>technical context from that period<\/strong>, not as universal recommendations for current projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LED technology has advanced significantly since then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Modern strips offer different efficacy, higher LED density, better colour rendering, new COB\/COF constructions and much broader control possibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a current design, luminous flux is therefore selected according to the specific application, the geometry of the space, the distance from the illuminated surface, the profile used and the desired result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">12 V or 24 V?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Supply voltage is another important parameter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For common fixed LED-strip installations, <strong>24 V DC<\/strong> is now very widely used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same power, a 24 V system carries approximately half the current of a 12 V system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In simplified form:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I = P \/ U<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, an LED strip with a total power of 120 W:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>at 12 V \u2192 approximately <strong>10 A<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>at 24 V \u2192 approximately <strong>5 A<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lower current helps reduce cable losses and is advantageous in longer installations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This does not mean that 12 V and 24 V components can be mixed freely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The supply voltage of the LED strip, power supply and control components must be compatible.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Light colour can significantly change the result<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LED strips are not selected by power and luminous flux alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Correlated colour temperature \u2013 CCT<\/strong> is also very important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a general guide:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>2700\u20133000 K<\/strong> \u2013 warm, comfortable light suited to residential and hospitality spaces,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>around 4000 K<\/strong> \u2013 neutral white for work and general lighting,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>5000\u20136500 K<\/strong> \u2013 cooler light for selected technical or work applications.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We also increasingly use <strong>CCT \/ Tunable White LED strips<\/strong>, which allow the colour temperature of white light to be adjusted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This makes it possible to use warmer evening light and more neutral task lighting in the same space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CRI \u2013 keeping colours true<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For LED strips intended for high-quality interior lighting, the <strong>CRI\/Ra colour rendering index<\/strong> is another important parameter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where accurate colour appearance matters, we prefer quality LED strips with <strong>CRI 90+<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Typical applications include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>kitchens,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>residential interiors,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>retail spaces,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>furniture,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>material showrooms,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>artworks and objects,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>showrooms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two strips may have a similar colour temperature and luminous flux, yet the resulting quality of light can be visibly different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">LED strips need proper thermal management<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LED technology produces significantly less waste heat than many older light sources, but heat is still generated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And it needs to be dissipated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why LED strips are installed in <strong>aluminium LED profiles<\/strong> in many applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A profile can serve several functions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>help dissipate heat,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>mechanically protect the LED strip,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>allow a diffuser to be fitted,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>provide a professional finish to the line of light,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>simplify integration into furniture or architecture.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is important to stress, however, that not every profile is suitable for every LED-strip power level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For higher-power assemblies, the thermal management of the specific solution must always be assessed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visible dots or a continuous line of light?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The appearance of LED strips has also changed considerably in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conventional SMD strips have individual LED chips positioned at set intervals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With an unsuitable profile or a very shallow diffuser, individual points of light can remain visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Modern <strong>COB\/COF and high-density LED strips<\/strong> can reduce this effect significantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even here, however, there is no universal rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The final uniformity depends on the combination of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>LED density,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the distance between the LEDs and diffuser,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>profile depth,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>diffuser type,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>viewing angle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A perfect line of light is the result of the complete system, not the LED strip alone.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The right power supply is part of the solution<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An LED strip needs a suitable power supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For constant-voltage strips, the basic calculation is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>total power = LED-strip length \u00d7 power per metre<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">5 m \u00d7 9.6 W\/m = <strong>48 W<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The power supply should then be selected with appropriate headroom, taking into account the specific supply type, installation method and manufacturer requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wattage alone is not the only consideration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We also check:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the correct output voltage,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the operating environment,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>cooling,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>IP protection,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the dimming method,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>control-system compatibility.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Long LED-strip runs require voltage-drop planning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The longer a low-voltage LED installation is, the more attention must be paid to how it is powered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With unsuitable wiring, the far end of a strip may be visibly dimmer or its colour may shift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We therefore assess:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the length of individual sections,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>power in W\/m,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>system voltage,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>conductor cross-section,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>distance from the power supply,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the maximum recommended strip feed length,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>whether multiple feed points are required.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is another reason why an LED strip is not simply a matter of buying a \u201croll of light\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From a simple strip to intelligent lighting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The possibilities offered by LED strips are much broader today than they were in 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to single-colour strips, we use:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>CCT \/ Tunable White<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>RGB<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>RGBW<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>RGB+CCT<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>digitally addressable strips,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>flexible NeonFlex systems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They can be integrated into different control systems to create lighting scenes, automation or dynamic effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on the project, professional installations may use PWM control, DALI, DMX, Casambi or other compatible systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The control solution must always match the specific LED-strip type and the electrical architecture used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">We were advising on LED strips as early as 2013<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For us, the Pekn\u00e9 b\u00fdvanie article is particularly interesting as another record of LEDCO\u2019s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At a time when LED strips were still a relatively new technology for many customers, we were already explaining publicly that lighting decisions should not be based on power consumption alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The amount and quality of light, proper design and the right technical solution are what matter.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over more than a decade, the product range and the possibilities of LED technology have expanded dramatically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The basic principle remains the same:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>we choose an LED strip according to what it needs to illuminate \u2013 not just by price or
