Modernising lighting and energy systems for schools
Energy-efficient schools = a healthier environment for students and lower operating costs
More and more schools recognise that investing in modern lighting and heating control is not only about saving energy, but also about improving the quality of the learning environment.
At LEDCO, we help primary, secondary and nursery schools across Slovakia with comprehensive upgrades of lighting, heating and photovoltaic systems – often without an upfront investment thanks to available grant schemes.
What can we provide?
- Replacement of outdated lighting with energy-efficient LED luminaires recommended by applicable standards
- Installation of sensor-based or autonomous lighting control based on occupancy or daylight
- Smart zoned heating control using the Danfoss Ally™ system
- Photovoltaic solutions for partial energy self-sufficiency
- Energy audits and support with grant applications
Why modernise?
- Up to 70% savings on lighting and heating
- Improved learning comfort and working conditions
- Potential funding through grant schemes (Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic, Modernisation Fund, Environmental Fund)
- Increasing the value of the building and the school’s ecological footprint
- Complete turnkey service – from design to maintenance
LED school modernisation in Bratislava: lighting and heating upgrades delivering annual savings of €15,680
Introduction – a problem many school leaders know well
Many schools in Slovakia still use lighting older than their pupils – outdated fluorescent lamps, unsuitable luminaires and inefficient heating. The result? High costs, an uncomfortable environment and unnecessary energy waste.
Škola umeleckého priemyslu Josefa Vydru in Bratislava chose a different path – one focused on savings and efficiency.
What did we implement?
LEDCO carried out a comprehensive upgrade of the school’s interior lighting and heating as part of a project supported by the Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic – Quick Measures grant scheme.
Measures that improve the school environment:
- Complete replacement of luminaires with modern LED luminaires featuring autonomous light-level control
- Sensor-controlled lighting in corridors and less frequently used areas
- Asymmetric luminaires at classroom boards – significantly improving visual comfort during lessons
- More than 250 Danfoss Ally™ smart thermostatic radiator valves, which enable zoned and remote temperature control via a mobile app
Results that speak for themselves
| Parameters | Before modernisation | After modernisation | Savings |
| Lighting power demand | 94 kW | 38 kW | -59,6 % |
| Electricity consumption | 131 600 kWh/rok | 53 200 kWh/rok | -78 400 kWh/rok |
| Financial savings | — | — | 15 680 €/rok |
| Heating control | Manual, imprecise | Zoned, smart | Savings + comfort |
What did the project deliver?
- More efficient school energy management – savings of more than €15,000 per year
- Improved visual and thermal comfort for students and teachers
- Full control of heating via the Danfoss Ally™ app
- No upfront investment required – project funded through a grant from the Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic
More projects across Slovakia
ZŠ Podzámska, Hlohovec
Upgrade of interior lighting and installation of thermostatic radiator valves. The project is funded through the Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic under the “Quick Measures” programme. Luminaire installation and replacement of thermostatic valves are currently under way.
ZŠ Vilka Šuleka, Šulekovo
Upgrade of classroom lighting and installation of a photovoltaic power plant. The luminaires were financed from the school’s own resources in several stages, while the photovoltaic system was funded by the municipality. The school now benefits from significantly lower energy consumption and greater self-sufficiency.
ZŠ Koperníkova, Hlohovec
A project similar to the one in Šulekovo – replacement of classroom lighting and installation of a photovoltaic system. Funding was provided by the City of Hlohovec. The project was implemented in stages with an emphasis on cost optimisation.
MŠ Mostná, Šurany
Upgrade of lighting and heating controls. LED panels with the HYTRONIK system were used to adjust brightness according to ambient light levels. Heating is controlled by digital thermostatic valves and a Danfoss Ally Pro gateway, enabling zoned temperature control and substantial savings.
ZŠ Bernolákova, Šurany
The school implemented the same type of upgrade as MŠ Mostná – smart lighting with HYTRONIK control and zoned heating regulation using Danfoss Ally Pro. The result is greater comfort and lower energy consumption.
ZŠ Kornela Mahra, Trnava
A large-scale project covering replacement of lighting in classrooms, the gym and the outdoor sports field. Some classrooms are equipped with autonomous LED luminaires that automatically adapt to ambient light levels. A photovoltaic power plant was also installed and financed from savings through a repayment model based on the school’s historical operating costs.
